ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The federal government is investing $2.4 million on upgrades to Burr Oak State Park to help promote tourism in southeast Ohio.
The upgrades will include new campsite amenities, trail segments and docks at the marina. The federal investment will be matched with $604,625 in local funds and is projected to create or retain 125 jobs.
The funding, announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Commerce, comes from the American Rescue Plan, the federal stimulus program signed into law by President Joe Biden early last year.
The program included $240 million for competitive grants to help support the recovery of communities that rely on the travel, tourism and outdoor recreation sectors.
“Ohioans depend on access to parks for outdoor recreation, community events and local jobs,” said Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown. “This funding from the American Rescue Plan will support the local economy, create jobs and promote local tourism at Burr Oak State Park.”
